The Second Annual National Parkinson Foundation Young-Onset Parkinson Network NPF YOPN ; Conference was held this year on July 29-August 1 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The goal of the NFF YOPN is to: - Focus on educating young-onset Parkinson's patients, their families and the public about the unique, real life issues facing the young-onset community. - Enable continued research efforts in search of a cure for Parkinson's disease. - Encourage and to empower new young-onset groups by providing them with programs and support services. I had no idea what it took to put on a conference of this magnitude when I first became involved with the group last January at a planning meeting in Miami. The YOPN group consists of volunteers who are all young-onset people with Parkinson's and all of them doing this because they have been through the same physical and emotional rollercoaster ride that comes with a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease at a young age. But most importantly they all truly care about the well being of other young people with Parkinson's. The YOPN group works under the direction of the Field Services staff of the National Parkinson Foundation. The conference would not have been possible without the sponsors and other organizations that stepped in to lend a helping hand in the form of volunteering and financial backing. The Struthers Center of Minnesota, an NPF Center of Excellence, and the Parkinson's Association of Minnesota PAM ; , were two of the biggest contributors at this years conference. PAM sponsored the "Meet and Greet" on the first night. The theme of the meet and greet was "The State Fair, " which seemed appropriate because the Minnesota state fair is one of the best in the country. It was a festive atmosphere, where people could meet new friends and get reacquainted with old friends that they may not have seen in awhile. The Struthers Center provided a 14 Hospitality room that was open 24 hours a day and stocked with drinks and snacks for those who just needed a break or, as so many people with Parkinson's have sleep problems, it gave a place to go and relax in the middle of the night. The room also became a place for people to go and just chat with friends. Both PAM and The Struthers Center helped organize volunteers for various roles throughout the conference. The conference started Friday morning with Ruth Hagestuen, NPF Director of Field Services giving the opening presentation. She also stood in for Nathan Slewett, Co-Chair of the National Parkinson Foundation, who was unable to attend due to events at home, one of which was the birth of his Great Grandson, Jonah Pierce Slewett. The highlight of Ruth's presentation was the announcement that the 2005 conference would be held in Phoenix, Arizona, and that St Joseph's Hospital, home of the Muhammad Ali Parkinson's Research Center, and Barrow Neurological Institute, had become a major cosponsor of the 2005 conference. Tamra Cantore, a young person with Parkinson's, gave a very inspiring talk on her life since being diagnosed. It was an excellent way to start the conference. The conference consisted of several general session speakers who addressed many of the topics that young-onset folks deal with such as Physical Changes Associated with Parkinson Disease, Cognitive Impairment and Depression, Sexuality, Intimacy & Relations. Other general session topics covered issues that are good to know about the disease, such as Complimentary Medicines, Parkinson's disease treatments, both currently used and in development, drug interactions with other drugs, foods and supplements. Deep Brain Stimulation and Accessing Your Life through Civil Rights were also discussed. There were special interest sessions which were smaller groups and designed to target specific people like Care Partners, and newly diagnosed people. Another set of sessions was the "Voices of Experience". These sessions were discussions moderated by experts in the field or persons who have had a lot of experience. These sessions included discussions on Deep Brain Stimulation, Depression, Parents with Children, Support Groups, Cognition and Advocacy. The conference ended with a Saturday night dance, Karaoke, and acknowledgements of the Organizing committee. Then Sunday morning were closing remarks by NPF Staff and the Organizing Committee. The real inspiration of the conference was the Conference Chair, Jackie Christensen from Minnesota. She worked hard and put in many hours, while also working full time, having a family, and fighting the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Her efforts were truly acknowledged on Sunday morning with an extended standing ovation from the conference attendees and staff. When it is all said and done, to me the best part of the conference is being with other young-onset people, sharing thoughts and ideas, and knowing that there are others who are feeling and suffering from the same disease and are willing to support each other in any way needed.

We evaluated total IgE and ECP serum and fresh less than 24 hours old ; blister fluid levels with fluoroenzymeimmunoassays, and the intensity of IgG and IgG4 dermal-epidermal junction DEJ ; deposits using direct immunofluorescence on saline-separated skin SSDIF ; with titration of FITC-conjugated anti-human IgG and IgG4 antibodies. Since IgG1 DEJ deposits were infrequently detected and generally weak and IgE DEJ deposits were detected in none of BP patients studied, despite using sensitive SSDIF, the analysis of their intensities could not be performed and their correlation studies were not done as planned initially. The statistical analysis using Spearman s rank correlation test revealed that, among laboratory parameters evaluated, only total IgE serum level correlated with the intensity of active lesions in human BP. Additionally, there was no correlation between the intensity of IgG and IgG4 DEJ deposits. Thus, it seems that IgEmediated phenomena, albeit conceivably in a disease-nonspecific manner, might be more important than both IgG1 IgG4-mediated and eosinophil-mediated processes in pathogenesis of human BP.
